Witch Post arrive with the usual burden of early hype and only a handful of singles and two EPs to support it, but it takes little more than a few bars of opening song “Ragged” to dissolve any initial skepticism in the Paris crowd. Their music draws from alternative rock, shoegaze, dream pop, and gothic folk, both American and European.
There is an almost mystical current running through their gentler material, along with a constant push and pull between opposing forces. That tension shapes the performance itself, which feels suspended between masculine and feminine energies, old world romanticism and modern sensibilities, something deeply rooted and something almost spectral. It is a delicate balance, but an engrossing one.
It will be interesting to watch where this band goes next. Their early releases suggest considerable promise, and their live show already delivers on it.
