Humanity's Last Breath opened the evening with a short but uncompromising set that immediately established the tone for what would follow. Presenting material from their latest album Ashen, the band delivered a barrage of supremely heavy, quasi industrial post hardcore textures, bowel churning death metal growls and crushing low end. The sound was punishing, and so was the staging. The musicians were rarely fully visible, often submerged in darkness or reduced to stark silhouettes by backlighting, a visual choice that amplified the sense of menace. It was an eerie, oppressive opening statement, designed less to entertain than to overwhelm, and it worked.
