We have said it before, and nights like this make the case again: a significant strain of the most compelling young rock bands today runs straight through psychedelia. From the serrated fuzz of Frankie and the Witch Fingers to the warped melodic turns of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, the lineage is clear.
Floral Image belong to that continuum, hovering somewhere between King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Osees, with flashes of The Byrds and the Nuggets underground embedded in their phrasing and attack.
At Café de la Danse, they played a tightly wound and purposeful set, full of shimmering guitars and cathedrals of vocal harmonies. Beneath it all, the rhythm section maintained a rave-up, frantic beat that pushed the tunes toward release. The effect was physical as much as cerebral and a the perfect introduction for headliner Kula Shaker.
