Brooklyn Funk Essentials @ New Morning, Paris - October 23rd, 2025

Brooklyn Funk Essentials returned to the same stage barely three months after their last visit, and once again Paris proved it can’t resist their urban groove. The New Morning was packed wall to wall, turned into a joyous dance floor where basslines throbbed and the crowd moved as one.

They opened with a sharp, funk-driven take on Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime,” followed by a mix of new songs from their upcoming album and familiar favorites like “Take the L Train.” Guitarist Desmond Foster and founding bassist Lati Kronlund drove the rhythm with steady precision while Alison Limerick’s voice filled the room with warmth and grit. Across two tight sets and ninety minutes of deep, physical funk, the band stayed locked, playful, and generous.

When the lights came up after their era-defining cover of Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has A Master Plan," no one seemed ready to leave. People lingered, still moving, as if the groove hadn’t stopped. In my head, it still hasn't.
