Formed in Atlanta in 2000, Mastodon quickly rose to prominence with their fusion of progressive metal, sludge, and intricate storytelling. Their breakthrough album Leviathan (2004), a concept record based on Moby Dick, cemented their reputation as one of the most ambitious bands in heavy music. Over the years, they evolved their sound across critically acclaimed releases like Blood MountainCrack the Skye, and Emperor of Sand, winning a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2018. Hinds' unique guitar work and unmistakable presence were a defining force in Mastodon's evolution. His signature mix of bluesy licks and intricate, psychedelic leads helped shape the band's distinctive sound.

Hinds had left Mastodon back in March amid bad blood and resentment. One can only hope that they had arrived at some sort of peace before this happened.
