J. Robbins opened the evening alone with an acoustic guitar and a set of songs that were concise, immediate and impactful. The stripped-down format highlighted the strength of his writing, while his relaxed, easy-going stage presence quickly won over the room. Funny, self-effacing and refreshingly no-nonsense, he kept things moving without ever overstaying his welcome.
For those who remember Jawbox and the Dischord years, it was a chance to catch one of the principal architects of American post-hardcore in an intimate setting. For the rest of the audience, it was simply a very good introduction.
