Oh no! There goes Tokyo Paris! After two sold-out dates at Le Trianon in 2022, Blue Öyster Cult is back at the Olympia, a venue they last played in 2009 alongside Uriah Heep.
Taking the stage to the tune of Vangelis' theme for Blade Runner, B.Ö.C. beat the audience into submission with the help of an absolutely epic setlist. Oddly, last year’s Ghost Stories didn’t feature at all, but with a career spanning over five decades, finding room for new material among the hits, must-play classics, fan favorites, and deep cuts for the die-hards is just not a priority.
Eric Bloom, now 80, plays very little guitar anymore, and his voice had become rather frail and shaky but his tough but affable stage presence more than makes up for his musical shortcomings. As for Buck Dharma, his playing is as fluid and as precise as ever and his solos were the frequent highlights of the night.
I'm not sure how many more opportunities we'll get to see these veterans of a thousand psychic wars set the City of Lights on flame with rock and roll.... Who knows? They are, after all, on tour forever.
