Celebrating three decades of sonic exploration, Mogwai return with their eleventh studio album, The Bad Fire. The title, a nod to a Glaswegian term for hell, hints at the turbulent times during its creation, notably multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns's daughter's serious illness. Yet, rather than descending into darkness, the album offers a sublime, soothing experience, showcasing a matured sound that balances intensity with melody.
The album opens with "God Gets You Back," featuring a looping melodic synth motif underscored by swelling cellos. As instruments layer in a crescendo, it seamlessly transitions into a dream pop/shoegaze piece, encapsulating the essence of The Bad Fire.
"Hi Chaos" begins with exquisite guitar arpeggios and a dark, almost gothic riff. The track progressively intensifies, building a trance-like state through treated guitars—a testament to Mogwai's ability to craft immersive soundscapes.
In "Fanzine Made of Flesh," the band introduces robotic vocals to their signature style, culminating in a quasi-Britpop melodic chorus. This blend of the mechanical and melodic showcases Mogwai's willingness to experiment within their established framework.
"Pale Vegan Hip Pain" slows the tempo, delving into a contemplative, dark ambiance reminiscent of an instrumental by The Cure. Its deliberate pacing and haunting melodies highlight the band's dynamic range.
Instrumental tracks like "Hammer Room" feature reverb-laden piano, string stabs, and a danceable beat, with a melodic lead guitar line making it one of the album's more cheerful tunes. Conversely, "Lion Rumpus" delivers a hard-rocking banger with a futuristic twist, blending neo-glam elements akin to Pulp with the pop/prog sensibilities of Muse.
Throughout The Bad Fire, Mogwai masterfully plays with light and shade, creating waves of sound that wash over the listener. The album's mostly instrumental tracks build tension and release, offering an immersive listening experience that is both grandiose and human. While it may lack the raw confrontational nature of their earlier work, this record stands as a testament to Mogwai's enduring allure and their ability to evolve while maintaining their core identity.
