Rémi Sztern performs under the name Tiwayo, a phonetic rendering of "TYO" for "The Young Old," which turns out to be a fairly accurate description of his music. Drawing equally from blues, soul and folk traditions, he builds bridges between Paris, Memphis and Spain, where part of his family originates, creating songs that feel timeless without lapsing into pastiche. Alone on stage with an electric guitar and, occasionally, a few carefully deployed loop pedals, Tiwayo relies on the oldest tricks in the book: concise songwriting, expressive singing and strong musicianship. Fortunately, he excels at all three. His guitar work is tasteful and economical, his voice carries genuine emotional weight, and the songs themselves arrive, make their point and leave before overstaying their welcome. As an opening act for The Dip, he provides exactly what the evening requires: a tasteful appetizer that whets the appetite without spoiling the meal to come.
