Outlaw country kicked down Nashville’s doors in the late 1960s, when renegades like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson rejected polished studio formulas for grittier songs about hard living and freedom. This 31-track journey rides from those roots (Johnny Cash, Billy Joe Shaver, Jessi Colter...) through later firebrands like Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams, and into today’s revival with Sturgill Simpson, Margo Price, and Colter Wall and Charley Crockett. It’s a straight shot of rebel spirit and storytelling that still bucks the rules.
