Opening for Cinder Well at Le Klub on Sept. 6, Bleu Reine offered a performance that defied easy categorization. Léa Lotz’ project conjured a sound that seemed to hover somewhere between the ethereal world of Kate Bush, the French folk traditions of Malicorne, the quasi punk rebellion of PJ Harvey and the blackgaze intensity of Deafheaven. The alchemy resulted in a spellbinding, sometimes disorienting, even uncomfortable, but ultimately rewarding listening experience. Lotz herself came across as somewhat self-effacing, while the music projected quiet confidence with its delicate arpeggios, oblique melodies, and that fascinating voice that could draw you in before unleashing sudden waves of darkness. An excellent set, perfectly attuned to the evening’s headliner.
