Nearly five years have passed since the Kris Barras Band's last full-band appearance in Paris. While Kris Barras returned briefly in 2020 for a pair of acoustic support slots with Beth Hart at the Olympia, this headlining date offers the first real opportunity to witness how dramatically the band's sound has evolved.
The transformation is striking. The blues-infused alternative rock that characterized much of their earlier work has been pushed aside in favor of something considerably heavier. Judging by the material previewed from The Halo Effect, due for release in April via Earache Records, Kris Barras Band has embraced a far more aggressive hard rock identity without sacrificing the melodic instincts that made the group appealing in the first place.
For nearly ninety minutes, Barras and his bandmates, guitarist and keyboardist Josiah J. Manning, bassist Frazer Kerslake and drummer Billy Hammett, deliver a performance built on massive riffs, powerful grooves and a steady stream of memorable hooks. The heavier direction suits them remarkably well. The songs hit harder, the arrangements feel more focused and the band's growing confidence is evident throughout.
Barras remains the focal point, effortlessly switching between soulful vocals and fiery guitar work, but the strength of the performance lies equally in the chemistry of the entire group. Manning adds texture and colour to the material while the rhythm section provides the kind of muscular foundation these songs require. Together, they sound less like a backing band and more like a fully unified unit.
What is perhaps most encouraging is that the increased heaviness never comes at the expense of songwriting. The riffs are bigger, the grooves more forceful and the solos more explosive, yet melody remains central to everything the band does. That balance between power and accessibility has become increasingly rare in modern hard rock.
The audience may be relatively small, but its enthusiasm leaves little doubt about the band's potential. On their first Paris headlining show, Kris Barras Band demonstrates that it is no longer simply a promising act on the rise. With The Halo Effect on the horizon and a live show this convincing, they look increasingly like one of the more formidable new forces in contemporary hard rock.
