Expectations can be a dangerous thing when your surname is Van Halen. Ever since Wolfgang Van Halen launched Mammoth WVH, much of the conversation surrounding the project has revolved around what it is not. Anyone arriving in search of a modern incarnation of Van Halen is likely to be surprised. The band's self-titled debut, now more than a year old, owes far more to contemporary American hard rock than to the California party-rock institution that made the family name famous.
That much becomes immediately apparent during Mammoth WVH's first French performance, a concise seven-song set delivered in support of Alter Bridge. Rather than attempting to replicate his father's legacy, Wolfgang has chosen to build something of his own. The influences are closer to Foo Fighters, Creed and the post-grunge generation than to "Panama" or "Hot for Teacher." That choice feels entirely logical. After all, Wolfgang Van Halen is not simply Eddie Van Halen's son. He is also a musician shaped by a different era, with a different set of influences.
The songs themselves are undeniably solid. Wolfgang proves himself a capable frontman, a strong singer and an accomplished guitarist, while the band delivers the material with confidence and professionalism. The audience responds warmly throughout, suggesting that most attendees have already adjusted their expectations accordingly.
If there is one criticism to be made, it is that the music occasionally feels a little too comfortable within its chosen framework. The craftsmanship is evident, but there are relatively few moments that truly leap out and demand attention. The performance is consistently good without quite becoming memorable.
That said, this remains an impressive opening statement. Many artists spend years searching for an identity distinct from the shadow cast by a famous parent. Wolfgang Van Halen appears to have found his remarkably quickly. The songs are strong, the musicianship is beyond reproach and the foundations are firmly in place.
For a first French appearance, it is difficult to ask for much more. The real question now is where Mammoth WVH goes next.
