The Alice Cooper Band Pre-Show Party - La Boule Noire, Paris - December 2nd, 2017

The night before Alice Cooper's Paris concert, several members of his touring band squeezed into La Boule Noire for an informal warm-up. The venue, one of the city's best rock clubs, proved the perfect setting for a loose, unpretentious evening built around classic songs, cold beer and the simple pleasure of making noise.

The choice of material suited the room perfectly. Rather than focusing on Alice Cooper's catalogue, the musicians worked their way through a selection of rock and roll favorites from artists such as T. Rex, Motörhead, Kiss and the Ramones. Stripped of elaborate production, costumes and theatrical staging, the evening became a reminder that beneath the spectacle these are simply musicians who love playing songs they grew up with.

The relaxed atmosphere encouraged a few surprises. Calico Cooper joined bassist Chuck Garric for selections from their Beasto Blanco project, one of several moments that blurred the line between rehearsal, celebration and rock club gig. The evening also doubled as a birthday celebration for guitarists Ryan Roxie and Nita Strauss, giving the proceedings an appropriately festive tone.

Nobody was trying to reinvent rock music. Nobody was attempting to deliver a career-defining performance. That was never the point.

Instead, the audience got something increasingly rare: accomplished musicians playing music they clearly enjoy, in a room small enough for every joke, every spontaneous interaction and every raised glass to feel part of the show.

A simple recipe, perhaps, but an effective one. By the end of the evening, the room was buzzing, the drinks were flowing and everyone involved seemed to be having exactly the kind of fun that rock and roll is supposed to provide.
