In exactly one month, Biréli Lagrène returns to La Seine Musicale for a concert at its Auditorium on November 4, presenting the music from Elegant People, the new album that earned a 9/10 review here at Electric Eye. Now sixty, the Alsatian guitarist has long since escaped the Django Reinhardt comparisons that accompanied his emergence as a teenage prodigy, building a career that has taken him through gypsy jazz, fusion, bebop, blues and countless points in between, alongside musicians including Jaco Pastorius, John McLaughlin and Jean-Luc Ponty.
Elegant People captures that breadth particularly well. Named after the Weather Report composition that Lagrène reworks on the record, the album moves from standards and blues to Brazilian music and fusion, with virtuosity serving the music rather than becoming its purpose. The same quartet heard on the album will take the stage at La Seine Musicale: Jean-Yves Jung on piano and Fender Rhodes, William Brunard on double bass and Raphaël Pannier on drums, with Lagrène on guitar.
Biréli Lagrène plays the Auditorium at La Seine Musicale on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
