King Congo Powers and his Pink Monkey Birds last played Paris less than a year ago so we really shouldn't complain, but it is a tad frustrating to see them in an opening capacity, because their shows are immensely fun and a 35-minute slot just isn't enough. Hopefully they gained a bunch of new fans with this date, and those fans will all show up in droves to the punk rock legend's next headlining show in the French capital.
Since that last Paris date, Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds have released That Delicious Vice, an excellent new record featuring their signature blend of rock n' roll, psychedelia, latin, swing, punk-rock, shock-rock, novelty pop, druggy lounge jazz and more. They played large excerpts from that album as well as tunes from Kid Congo's storied career with The Cramps and Gun Club.
All in all, a concise yet impactful set that left the audience clearly wanting more... Paris will undoubtedly be eager for their return, this time in a well-deserved headlining slot.
