It has been a little over a year since The Sheepdogs last headlined Paris, and while this appearance finds them in the less glamorous role of opening act, they approach the assignment with their customary enthusiasm. Forty-five minutes is not a lot of time to make an impression, but the Canadian band wastes very little of it, delivering a concentrated dose of the elements that have earned them such a loyal following: twin guitars, deep grooves and vocal harmonies steeped in classic rock traditions.
Particular attention is focused on guitarist Ricky Paquette, who recently joined the band following Jimmy Bowskill's departure. Any questions regarding his ability to fill that role are answered almost immediately. Paquette brings a slightly different flavour to the group's sound, leaning more heavily into hard rock without disrupting the chemistry that makes the band work. His playing is assertive, energetic and perfectly suited to the material.
The set is over almost as soon as it begins. A headlining performance naturally allows more room for the band's catalogue to breathe, but even in abbreviated form these songs connect quickly. By the time The Sheepdogs leave the stage, they have likely gained a few new converts and reminded existing fans why they remain such a dependable live proposition.
