Black Indians of New Orleans @ Musée du Quai Branly, Paris - October 18th, 2022

Black Indians of New Orleans is a wonderful exhibit at the Musée du Quai Branly which showcases artifacts and documents from the Louisiana African-American community, from the days of slavery up until the modern era.

The highlights of this collections are undoubtedly the spectacular Mardi Gras costumes on display. But this isn't just an accumulation of objects and artwork: every piece is woven into an engaging narrative which details its historical and cultural context, complete with compelling visual aids and documents. And while a lot of what is presented has an undeniable festive element, it cannot be separated from the horrors and tragedies of slavery. The darkness of America's past continues to resonate today, as the country continues to struggle with racism and violence.

The collection wouldn't be complete without some traditional musical instruments, as music is a crucial part of the cultural heritage. A lot of the music that we love and talk about has its roots in these historical and geographical backgrounds.

Check out our New Orleans Playlist from summer 2020 HERE. It goes beyond the specific themes of the exhibit, but is still somewhat relevant.

The exhibit runs until January 15th. Click HERE to reserve your tickets.
