Zeal & Ardor began with a premise provocative enough to overshadow the music: what might have happened if the spirituals of enslaved Black Americans had turned toward the Devil rather than Christianity, and what would that history sound like filtered through black metal? Live in London demonstrates how far Manuel Gagneux's project has moved beyond the cleverness of that initial concept.
Recorded at the Electric Ballroom in December 2018, the album captures the full band at a point when the studio ideas had become something much more physical. The riffs are heavier, Marco von Allmen's drums give the music a kinetic force unavailable to programmed arrangements, and the group vocals acquire a communal dimension that changes their meaning.
Those voices remain the most unsettling element. Call-and-response patterns drawn from spirituals are recast as chants, invocations and declarations, often surrounded by distorted guitars and blast beats. On "Blood in the River" and "We Never Fall", the repetition creates something close to a hymn while the surrounding music works deliberately against any sense of religious comfort.
The accessibility of the songs becomes clearer in performance. "Built on Ashes" contains a hook strong enough to survive outside extreme metal, while the contrast between melody and aggression gives the heavier passages more definition. Zeal & Ardor are most convincing when neither half of the equation is treated as decoration.
The concert setting also introduces an element missing from the project's theoretical description: pleasure. The music is dark, violent and loaded with historical tension, yet hearing a band and audience occupy the same room gives it release. The ritualistic atmosphere becomes collective rather than academic.
That matters because a concept this loaded could easily have become an intellectual exercise. Gagneux avoids that fate through songwriting and performance. These pieces work before their historical framework is explained, and the framework makes them more complicated rather than rescuing them from abstraction.
Live in London is therefore more than a souvenir of a successful tour. It records the moment Zeal & Ardor's collision of spirituals, blues, black metal and industrial weight became a genuine live language, one capable of sounding stranger, heavier and more communal than the studio versions that introduced it.
