Thirty years after Slow Turning, John Hiatt has reunited with The Goners to take the album back on the road. That also means Sonny Landreth is back on lead guitar, which makes this considerably more interesting than the average anniversary tour.
Hiatt and the band are in superb form at the Alhambra, playing with the loose assurance of musicians who know these songs inside out without simply going through the motions. Hiatt's weathered voice has only gained character with age, while Landreth is predictably stellar, his slide guitar slipping around and through the songs with that instantly recognizable touch.
The atmosphere is relaxed, the playing immaculate and the setting unusually intimate for music with this much history behind it. Thirty years on, Slow Turning doesn't need much of an anniversary celebration. Put Hiatt, Landreth and The Goners in a small theatre and let the songs do the rest.
