The majestic Élysée-Montmartre burned down about five years ago and it looked like it would never open. I have some great memories from that venue, and I am happy to come back here for the first time since Jane's Addcition's show back in 2003.
To be honest I haven't been catching up with Morcheeba, or Skye & Ross from Morcheeba as they call themselves while legal disputes are being resolved. Last I heard, Skye had left the band so I am happy to see her back in the fold since her voice is probably the most distinctive thing about the trip-hop group's music. And what a voice! She goes effortlessly from an enigmatic whisper to a soulful scream while Ross Godfrey plays a mean guitar. His lines are less abstract than his trip-hop contemporaries, he is steeped in the blues and he can also get quite funky.
The setlist is mostly centred around the new album as well as their classic Big Calm but also featured a cover of David Bowie's Let's Dance. The light show was superb and a perfect complement to the hypnotic beats of this great band. Welcome back.
