We were expecting Jeff Beck to play with his current backing band Bones but for some mysterious reason the girls didn't make it and we got to see a more traditional Jeff Beck show. He played his instrumentals as a quartet and added vocalist Jimmy Hall when needed. We're not complaining! In fact, this was really for the best as we are not really big fans of his latest album Loud Hailer.
It's staggering how his playing gets better with age. His tone and phrasing are unique, and the little nuances he adds everywhere are the result of total control over his fingers and instrument. This man's guitar really is his voice.
Accompanied by a fantastic band as usual (Rhonda Smith on bass and Jonathan Joseph on drums), he played songs from all of his solo career as well as some Yardbirds and a few covers. But the repertoire is really just the treasure chest for the jewel of the night: his guitar playing, and on that front is is truly without an equal.
