Popa Chubby @ Chicago B.L.U.E.S., New York City - December 28th, 1996

I caught Popa Chubby in a club in New York called the Chicago B.L.U.E.S. back in December 1996. He was hot off the heels of his major label debut "Booty and the Beast", released on the resurrected Okeh imprint for Sony Music, and he was considered the next big thing in blues rock, both figuratively and literally.

I've seen him a few times since in much larger venues and he never fails to impress. His voice is powerful and his guitar playing is raw and emotive.

The club is long gone but the blues are still alive and well: Popa Chubby is now a very established artist (and a bona-fide superstar in France) and I'm lucky to have caught him in such a setting when his star was just beginning to rise.
